Dear PJ Low,
because the explanation is going to be long, I'm going to explain everything in this comment. After this, I won't be browsing your blogs anymore.
It seems that you have a misconception about the Shogi Club in JCKL. JCKL is a place where Japanese have their club activities - no ordinary people can enter unless they're invited or a member. The Shogi Club is held in a room called Fuji Room, which is also shared by the Go Club. We normally open our Shogi and Go Clubs at 3pm on Saturday but only the Go Club is open at 3pm on Sunday. To make matters clear, it is not a combination of Shogi and Go Club.
Go Club activities is operated by the Malaysia Weiqi Association whereas Shogi Club is operated by the president of the Shogi Club, which has no society nor association and have no relationship with the Malaysia Weiqi Association.
The thing about the Shogi Club is that it's not a proper club. You can say that it's just a place for old Japanese men to gather and play Shogi leisurely. We do not have any professionals nor teachers to teach us Shogi. But we do invite professionals to teach Shogi only once per year.
Next, they do not sell Shogi sets in the club. In fact, I got mine from the internet. But I've heard from another friend that he managed to get a Shogi set in the curve so you can try your luck there. He said that it cost around RM 5 so don't expect good qualities.
I've been in JCKL for more than 2 years and I'm very confident and sure to tell you that I am the only active Malaysian Shogi player in JCKL. Sometimes there won't be any Shogi players showing up in JCKL except me! For the whole two years, I've only saw the president, who has a strength of 5-dan amateur, twice and never saw him teach anything. And do not expect the Japanese to teach you Shogi because they're not good in English. In fact, I self-taught myself how to play Shogi. That's why I said you can only learn Shogi when I'm around. I can assure you that I'm a very strong player with a strength of 1-dan, which I have beaten most of the Japanese Shogi players there.
I have taught a few people how to play Shogi in JCKL but the problem is they are active Go players! Do not expect them to teach Shogi, especially since that they're beginners in Shogi who have no knowledge about Shogi strategies, history and events. I can ensure you that there are no other active Shogi clubs in Malaysia other than the one in JCKL.
Now about DaiCon. I have been asked by a girl from MU, who is a regular active Go player in JCKL, to help her promote Shogi. Unfortunately I can't because I won't be in Malaysia during that period. If she were to ask other Shogi players to promote Shogi in your university, it will be the Japanese from JCKL. I've promoted Shogi with the Japanese (they asked for my help too) in University of Malaya too last year and I can ensure you that you will learn nothing from them. I'll be very honest here. I've saw them taught but they can't really teach and the students don't really know how to play in the end. Lastly, if the girl from MU did not ask the Japanese for help, I can guarentee you that no one will be promoting Shogi in your university. There are few Go players which I've taught them how to play Shogi, but they will be busy teaching Go so don't expect them to teach Shogi, especially when they've only played Shogi for a total of 2 or 3 days.
Another thing is this Saturday will be your last chance to learn Shogi from me in JCKL. Because after that I won't be in Malaysia for the whole two months. As I have mention earlier, no one is going to teach you Shogi there if I'm not there. So please try to make an effort to come to JCKL this Saturday if you truly have a passion to learn how to play Shogi.
